Review on Flashart November 2016

ANDREA KVAS, VALERIO NICOLAI and ENEJ GALA are the artists of the new show at A plus A Gallery, whose main plot is dictated by painting. Beyond the subject and content expressed as individual artists, their art is united by the idea of the pictorial, that exceeds and goes beyond the traditional limits of the canvas in order to invade the space around them. Similar to most experimental theatrical research, the work of these three artists is based on the idea of overcoming the barriers erected by clichés and surprise the viewer with the expressiveness of their works and how they are displayed.

There is a will to disorient the viewer, a sort of necessity that comes from inside each artist and shows out in a silent and devastating shriek, where awareness of the function of painting and its expansion into space is the point of tearing of the self until its abolition.

Compared with the myth of Narcissus, where the realistic pictorial representation is the metaphor of falsehood, which leads to the painful awareness of the world around us; in the case of Andrea Kvas, Enej Gala and Valerio Nicolai, this process isn’t only about representing deception. It is rather a concrete form of action, a process that leads to show us the vulnerability of art and painting.

Despite the differences, the three artists are united by a powerful irony that captures the viewers in order to bring them closer to a seductive artistic language, subduing and taking them to an experimental dimension in which certainties and values are systematically broken and reconfigured.

Born in Gorizia nel1988, he lives and works in Venice. In 2012 he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice in 2013. He is among the winners of the artistic residence at the Fondazione Bevilacqua la Masa, and in 2011 he got the scholarship of the 95th Young Artists Collective. Valerio has exhibited in Venice, Rome, Milan, Turin. His work unfolds like a puzzle of images that reveal the secrets hidden within the work. These are unknown symbols, living almost an own life, that are discovered, they tell stories, hear and leave only perceive their presence, largely denying the relationship with the observer.

Born in Ljubljana in 1990 and currently based in Venice. In 2013 he obtained a Bachelor degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, specializing in painting. He spent a period of study abroad at the Williem De Kooning Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam. In 2015 he graduated from the two-year period at the same Academy in Venice, always painting. Enej participated in various solo and group exhibitions in Slovenia, Italy, Montenegro, Croatia, Albania, Senegal, the Netherlands and Portugal. In 2012 he won a one year Residency at the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa. In 2015 he was selected by curator English Nicola Lees at the International Biennial of Ljubljana graphics and the same year he won the Walking with Art Stonefly Prize of the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa.

The works by Andrea Kvas (Trieste, 1986) constitute an investigation of the pictorial genre assumptions. Stripping rules and conventions, the artist constructs and deconstructs images, subjecting various materials to intensive processing and reconfiguration processes. Andrea Kvas has exhibited in several museums, foundations and galleries in Italy and abroad. Among the most significant institutions should be noted: Museo Marino Marini, Florence; MACRO, Rome; Chert, Berlin; Ermes-Ermes, Vienna; Kaufmann Repetto, Milan; Frutta Gallery, Rome; Jeanine Hofland, Amsterdam; Fondazione per l’arte, Rome.
